Description
This is a blanket chest that features a paneled exterior lid/cover with decorative hammered brass finished metal protecting each of the four exterior corners. It has a medium dark stain. Inside the lid, there is a gold-colored plaque stating "This wood was taken from a log used by Col. Davis in building a dam in 1788 on the site now occupied by Lane MFG. Co." Additionally, there is a sliding cedar tray located inside the chest. The handles at each end of the chest and on the front of the lid are made of the same hammered metal as the corner protectors. On the front of the exterior, the initials "M.R." are also featured in hammered brass-colored metal, which stands for Maizie Rumsey. The plain bracket feet support the chest on each corner. The keyhole and lock on the chest are both made of brass, and the key to lock and unlock the chest is included with it.

Description
Grain painted, three-drawer blanket chest. Appears to have five drawers, the top two are false and disguise a lift-top chest. Appears to be of mostly pine with joined construction. Drawer rails are nailed, but may have been added later. The chest shows evidence of bracket feet, now missing. The drawer fronts and sides are grain-painted to look like book-matched veneer. The remaining surfaces, save the back, are sponge painted in the same brown and yellow coloration. The drawers all show evidence of two-pin pulls, later replaced with the wooden knobs. Under the lid, there are small areas of surface that have plain red paint. The holes for the original pulls have been filled and the grain painting applied over. It's probable that the piece was originally plain red and later modified with the wooden pulls and elaborate grain painting.

Context
According to family history, this chest was brought to Calais, Vermont, by Abijah Wheelock in 1789. One of the earliest European families to settle in this area, objects associated with the Wheelocks held a certain colonial allure. It's evident that this chest went through a fair amount of modification. It was probably painted plain red, sported bracket feet, and simple brass pulls. At some time the feet were removed or broke off. The spectacular grain painting was added at a later date, perhaps as early as the 1820s. Vermont had a great tradition of grain painting - transforming plain furniture forms of soft woods into something akin to high style mahogany, curly maple, or figured fruit wood examples from prosperous cities.

Gift of Allyn and Charles Scott, #1948.4
In the fall of 1774, the men of Chester were asked to express their opinions about the actions of the British parliament. They met at the home of Jonathan Tarbell on October 10, 1774, and resolved to oppose those actions. They declared they would disobey and fight a government that didn’t protect their rights. These resolutions were copied into Chester’s Book of Town Records on September 2, 1776. Family legend states that, "to reaffirm their earlier declarations, forty-two men signed the record book as it sat on this table." After that, people referred to the Tarbell house as Chester’s Independence Hall.

Cellarette
Interpretative Labels

Horatio Seymour of Middlebury built his federal home (1815-1820) and put this furniture in a niche in the dining room. Until acquired by VHS, these were the only known pieces of pre-1850 Vermont furniture that were in the house, still in the original spot, where their owner placed them. The building and the furniture, the latest fashion of the day, reflected Seymour's wealth and status in the community. A lawyer by training, Seymour was elected U.S. Senator from Vermont serving from 1821 to 1833. His home, located next to the Congregational Church, was lived in by his descendants, the Battells and Swifts, who gave it to Middlebury in 1932. It is known today as the Community House.
Middlebury was a bustling and thriving town when Seymour purchased this furniture. There were several cabinetmakers capable of making stylish pieces that these, but at this point we don't know which one produced these two. The sideboard was used to hold serving pieces, linens, and silverware. The cellaret, a rare furniture form in Vermont, has square wooden compartments inside for holding bottles of wine and liquor.

Daniel M. Tuthill was born in Westminster in 1807 and probably learned his trade from one of the local cabinetmakers working in Windham County. Tuthill had his own business in the Saxton's River section of Rockingham by 1833. This chair is similar to thousands of others that were mass produced in New England at that time. It is stenciled on the back in gold, "D.M. Tuthill/Saxton's Village, VT/Warranted." Tuthill would have employed several people in his furniture factory, probably on a seasonal basis to make the pieces, assemble, paint, stencil, and make the chair seats. In addition to chairs Tuthill made clocks, mirrors and picture frames and cabinet furniture in the early 1840s. By 1850 Tuthill had moved, like so many other Vermonters, to western New York where he continued to practice his trade.
Though this chair was one of hundreds made at Tuthill's factory, it still reflects the considerable skill required to make and finish. Note the variety and layers of color used to decorate it. The chair seat is not original to this piece.

This is a ladder back chair that was crafted with a reed seat. It features three slats on the back, as well as two rungs on both the front and sides of the chair. The back of the chair only has one rung, which was likely intentional as part of its design. Upon close inspection, it is evident that the wood on the chair shows traces of red and green paint. The backs of the slats are gouged, while the bottom slat appears to be severely cracked. The reed seat of the chair is wider towards the front than it is towards the back, and it seems to have been replaced at some point in the past.

Benjamin W. Powers was the progenitor of three generations of chairmakers who worked in East Lyndon for almost a century. According to tradition, Powers began to work in the town soon after his marriage in 1814. He developed a specific style of slat-back chair with a woven ash seat, which in the mushroom turnings of the arms and placement and number of rungs resembles chairs made in the Plymouth Colony during the seventeenth century. Whether this similarity was intentional (1820 was the bicentennial of the landing in Plymouth) or simply coincidental is unknown. In either instance, the basic shape was only slightly modified over the years by his son Benjamin F. Powers (1816-1897) and his grandson Henry G. Powers (1840-1901). The two later generations usually stenciled their names on the back of the middle slat of their chairs.

France
Gift of the State of Vermont, 1964.63.125
In 1949, the French people shipped 49 boxcars filled with tokens of gratitude for the trainloads of food, clothing, and medicine that the United States had sent in 1947 to assist France's recovery following World War II. The "Merci Train," a response to the "American Friendship Train," arrived in February.
There was an antique boxcar full of gifts and messages for each of the 48 states, plus one for Hawaii and the District of Columbia to share. Vermont's boxcar arrived in the state aboard a flatbed car on February 9. It made short stops in Brattleboro, Bellows Falls, and White River Junction on its way to Montpelier. The official welcoming ceremony took place on February 10, and included Governor Ernest W. Gibson Jr. and Count Max de Montalembert, the French vice-consul in Boston.
Vermont's boxcar contained hundreds of items--dolls, toys, paintings, crafts, pencil boxes, embroidered collars, wooden puppets, ornamental fans, paintings, vases, trinkets, books, cards, and letters. Some of the artwork was given to the Fleming Museum at the University of Vermont in Burlington, some French books to Middlebury College, and individual items were sent via legislators to towns and libraries throughout the state. The remainder--nearly 200 items--has been in the custody of and stored at the Vermont Historical Society.
Pieces from the collection have been displayed twice since they arrived in that boxcar 70 years ago--in the 1950s and in 1988.

Gift of Margaret Hyde Fay Brown, #1922.14.2
Ethan Allen, Thomas Chittenden, and Dr. Jonas Fay all used this desk when they stayed at the Catamount Tavern. The proprietor of the tavern, Stephen Fay, hosted these and other men when they met to organize the Green Mountain Boys, fight the British advancing on Bennington, and plan how Vermont would be governed.
Stephen’s wife Ruth may have sat at this desk in the fall of 1777 as she struggled to write a difficult letter to relatives in Connecticut. She had lost her son, John, at the Battle of Bennington, and his wife and two baby sons died unexpectedly a few weeks later.

Mahogany, pine, and basswood
Bequest of Carolyn A. Pratt, 1966.7
James Wellington Stevens was born at Middlebury in 1815 and was apprenticed to a man named Sweet before moving to Craftsbury shortly after his twenty-first birthday in 1836. According to the entries in his extant account books, also in the collection of VHS, he began to work in June of 1836 and continued until 1855. This corroborates family history, which states that he ceased cabinetmaking "in the fifties" and opened a daguerreotype studio in town.
Stevens' account books reveal that he was typical of Vermont's versatile woodworkers, recording jobs from the making of "18 shoe patterns" to "setting glass in school house." The range of his furniture production was also broad, from a 98-cent footstool to a $19.50 sofa. In between were center, dining, and tea tables, French bedsteads, sets of "fancy" chairs, and bureaus. Accompanying the account books are several 19th-century stencil patterns and early transfer decals.

Wood, paper, brass
Anonymous gift, 1921.16
James Wilson of Bradford was raised on a farm and trained briefly as a blacksmith. He moved to Bradford as a young man in 1796 and became interested in cartography. After visiting Dartmouth College's map collection, he grew particularly enamored of globes, and set out to make his own. It took several years of experimentation and learning new skills - he was almost exclusively self-taught - but Wilson began officially manufacturing his globes in 1813. Producing a high-quality globe required mastering a variety of skills - printing, engraving, woodworking, and blacksmithing - all with a high degree of precision.
Wilson manufactured a variety of globes, including a line of papier-mache globes that he could produce and sell inexpensively. His globes were the first to be manufactured in America, and found a ready audience in schools in particular. This globe was not among his first run, but was produced later, in 1816. The Wilson Manufacturing Company continued to produce globes in Vermont and New York for nearly fifty years.

The wooden stand encircles the globe horizontally and on its flat surface there are more printed paper designs depicting astrological signs. The horizontal piece also includes measurement hash marks meant to indicate latitude.
The wooden stand is supported on four turned legs that are connected crosswise in the center. The globe can spin freely or be locked in place by making adjustments to the brass piece.
On the legend on the globe is printed the explanatory text: "A NEW / TERRESTRIAL GLOBE, / on which the / TRACTS and NEW DISCOVERIES / are laid down / from the Accurate Observations / made by / Cap.t. Cook, Furneux, Phipps & C. / By J. WILSON, VERMONT."

Gift of David Stone, 1978.14.1a-c
Arthur Atwater Kent was born in Burlington, but moved to Worcester, MA with his family as a child. He spent some time studying at the Worcester Polytechnic Institute but did not graduate, having already begun his own business making small electric motors, generators, fans, and an automobile ignition system of his own design.
In 1921, he began making radio parts, selling them as do-it-yourself kits for early enthusiasts. By 1925, the Atwater Kent Manufacturing Company was the largest maker of radios in the United States. By 1931, they boasted that they had produced over 3 million radios.
Though Kent had started with small kits for enthusiasts, by the late 1920s the company was focusing on high-end, high-quality models. As a result, the Great Depression hit the company particularly hard, and by 1936 its factory in Philadelphia, which had employed as many as 12,000 people at its height, closed.
Many Kent radios were built into furniture pieces, and this table is an example of a particularly elaborate one. It was made by the Kiel Company of Milwaukee, and originally cost $175 when it came on the market in 1929. The company offered installment plans, which made even this high-end piece of technology accessible to the average American. At the time, radios would have occupied the central place in a home that televisions hold today – as a focal point of a room, a primary source of entertainment, and a connection to the outside world.

Context
Family history states this half-sideboard was made by Albert Onion, of Chester, Vermont in 1840. Though inscribed with his name, the piece dates from earlier in the century, probably constructed around 1815 at the latest. A vibrant cabinetmaking industry existed in the early years of the 19th century in Chester and the nearby town of Windsor, Vermont. The half sideboard form was popular in northern Windsor county.
Cabinetmakers Sampson Warner, George Stedman, and Royal Gould all worked in Chester. It's thought that Stedman and perhaps Gould apprenticed to Warner. Stedman and Gould family members ran a mercantile business in Chester in close proximity to a similar business owned by the Onion family. The string inlay along the top and the complex shape of the front certainly relate to furniture made by both Gould and Stedman. Stedman ultimately moved to Norwich and Gould to Rutland. The Onion family, including Alfred, also moved to the Rutland area and may indicate a connection between the Goulds and the Onions.
This piece may have been purchased by the prosperous Onion family in the 1810s or Albert acquired it around the 1840 date. Albert partnered in mercantile businesses from the late 1820s to 1840 when he was listed in the census as owning a tanning factory.

Writing Desk, 1857

Wood, metal, leather
Gift of Sumner E. Kinsley, #1992.30.2b
Rufus Kinsley grew up in Fletcher and then moved to St. Albans to work as a printer for the St. Albans Messenger. He followed that trade to Boston around 1850, where he worked for a series of papers including the Massachusetts Life Boat and the Boston Evening Traveller.
Kinsley was raised in a deeply Christian household by a father who was a staunch abolitionist. While in Boston he lived in an integrated neighborhood in the West End and attended the May Street African Methodist Episcopal Church. The May Street Church was well-known as a radical abolitionist institution, and its pastor, the Reverend Elijah Grissom, had himself escaped from slavery. Kinsley served as superintendent of the Sabbath School at the church, and when he stepped down from that position in 1857 the Church gave him this writing desk.
In 1861, Kinsley enlisted in Company F of the 8th Vermont Regiment. Four of his brothers also enlisted in the Union Army. Kinsley took on a variety of tasks for the Army, including supervising a camp in Algiers, Louisiana that cared for formerly enslaved Black refugees. While there, he volunteered in the camp school, using this desk to teach reading and writing.
In August 1863, Kinsley was appointed second lieutenant in a regiment of Black soldiers. (During the Civil War, most regiments with Black soldiers were assigned white officers.) Many of the men serving with Kinsley had been enslaved, and he again used his writing desk and took the time to teach what he later estimated to be hundreds to read and write.
After the war, Kinsley returned to Vermont and married. He suffered from a series of illnesses that made his life as a farmer difficult, and it took him years to claim his Army pension.

The back of each door has a specialized storage area: one is split to hold four tools, and the second has a pleated envelope with a tappe closing flap. A long, narrow section stretches across the bottom and is filled with removable trays, allowing for multiple layers of storage. The end section holds an ink bottle. There are pen nibs, an ink bottle, and pen handle inside the case.
