Burlington was the center of the lumber industry from the 1850s-1890s. One Burlington resident, Lawrence Barnes, found a way to make a lucrative business out of milling the cheap lumber that came from Canada and loading more of it onto trains. By the end of the 19th century, businesses changed to production of other goods and shipping, to cut down on the growth of Canadian lumber.
