Vice President Theodore Roosevelt attended a dinner of the Vermont Fish and Game League at the Isle La Motte home of Vermont Lt. Gov. Nelson Fisk on September 6, 1901. While there he learned of the shooting of President William McKinley in Buffalo. He left Vermont for New York and became president upon McKinley's death on September 14.
